Carlisle Floyd papers [addition], 1944-2001.

Papers, 1944 and 1970-2001, including letters written to Floyd by American poet, novelist, and literary critic Robert Penn Warren between 1973 and 1982, the majority of which discuss the artistic conception and evolution of Floyd's opera "Willie Stark," an adaptation of Warren's 1946 novel All the King's Men. Houston Grand Opera performed the world premiere of "Willie Stark" on 24 Apr. 1981 with Robert Penn Warren in attendance. Theatrical director and producer Hal Prince directed the inaugural production; this acquisition includes a letter of 23 June 1980 in which Prince offers his pre-production criticism of "Willie Stark." Includes letters from performer Alan Kays; stage director Frank Corsaro; conductor of the Seattle Opera, Hans Wolf; Mayor Kathryn J. Whitmire, of Houston, Texas; American composers Mark Adamo, Jake Heggie, Henry Mollicone, Ned Rorem, and Larry Alan Smith; vocal coach and accompanist George Darden; and Floyd's onetime piano student at Florida State University, Polly Holliday, known for her work on television and the stage.
